Indication:
Short-term treatment (up to 8 weeks) of active duodenal ulcers.
Maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer patients at a reduced dosage after healing of acute ulcers.
Pharmacology, Dosage & Administration:
Pharmacology: Sucralfate forms a protective barrier on ulcer sites, shielding them from stomach acid and aiding healing.
Dosage: The recommended adult dosage for active duodenal ulcers is 1 gram (one tablet) four times daily on an empty stomach. Maintenance therapy is typically 1 gram twice daily.
Interaction:
Sucralfate may reduce the absorption of certain drugs, including phenytoin, digoxin, and cimetidine. It’s advisable to administer other medications at least 2 hours before sucralfate.
Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to sucralfate or any of its components.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include constipation, dry mouth, nausea, and upset stomach.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Sucralfate should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution is advised when administering to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use with caution in patients with chronic renal failure due to the potential for aluminum accumulation.
Overdose Effects:
Overdosage is unlikely; however, excessive doses may lead to symptoms like indigestion. In such cases, discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional.
