Indication:
Used for the prevention and long-term treatment of asthma, relief of allergic rhinitis symptoms, and prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

Pharmacology, Dosage & Administration:
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) that blocks leukotrienes, reducing inflammation and bronchoconstriction. The usual adult dose is 10 mg once daily, taken in the evening for asthma or as needed for allergies.

Interaction:
May interact with CYP3A4 and CYP2C9 inducers like rifampin, phenobarbital, and carbamazepine, potentially reducing its effectiveness.

Contraindications:
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to montelukast or any of its components.

Side Effects:
Common side effects include headache, dizziness, abdominal pain, nausea, and flu-like symptoms. Rarely, neuropsychiatric effects such as mood changes and suicidal thoughts may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy Category B – No known teratogenic effects, but should be used if clearly needed. Excretion in breast milk is unknown; caution is advised during lactation.

Precautions & Warnings:
Not for acute asthma attacks. Monitor for neuropsychiatric symptoms (e.g., agitation, depression). Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.

Overdose Effects:
Symptoms of overdose may include abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, or hyperactivity. Supportive treatment is recommended.
