Indication:
Used for the treatment of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. It helps prevent asthma attacks but is not used for acute asthma relief.
Pharmacology, Dosage & Administration:
Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) that blocks leukotrienes, reducing inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production.
Standard dose: 10 mg once daily, taken in the evening.
Can be taken with or without food.
Interaction:
May interact with phenobarbital and rifampin, reducing its effectiveness.
Should be used cautiously with NSAIDs in aspirin-sensitive asthma patients.
Contraindications:
Hypersensitivity to montelukast or any of its components.
Not suitable for acute asthma attacks.
Side Effects:
Common: Headache, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue
Rare: Mood changes, agitation, allergic reactions, liver enzyme elevation
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Pregnancy Category B – No known risk in humans, but should be used under medical advice.
Can be used in lactation, but consult a physician before use.
Precautions & Warnings:
Monitor for neuropsychiatric symptoms (e.g., mood swings, suicidal thoughts).
Not a substitute for inhaled or emergency asthma medications.
Overdose Effects:
Symptoms may include abdominal pain, drowsiness, thirst, headache, vomiting.
Supportive treatment is recommended.
