Indication: Reef-DX is indicated for the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, tetany, hypoparathyroidism, and disorders of osteogenesis. It is also used as a supplement in cases of inadequate calcium intake during childhood, pregnancy, lactation, and in elderly patients. Additional uses include management of pancreatitis and as a phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.
Pharmacology, Dosage & Administration: Calcium is essential for various bodily functions, particularly bone formation and maintenance. Vitamin D3 enhances calcium absorption from the gastrointestinal tract and stimulates bone formation. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the combination of calcium and vitamin D3 supports bone growth and aids in the prevention of osteoporosis and fractures.
The recommended dosage is one tablet in the morning and one at night, preferably taken with food to improve absorption. Alternatively, as directed by a physician.
Interaction: Oral calcium can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and fluoride preparations; a minimum interval of 3 hours should be maintained between ingestion of these medications. Thiazide diuretics may decrease renal calcium excretion, increasing the risk of hypercalcemia. Phenytoin, barbiturates, and glucocorticoids can induce the metabolism of Vitamin D3. Certain foods, such as spinach and cereals, may reduce calcium absorption.
Contraindications: Reef-DX is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to any of its components, hypercalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, bone metastases, severe renal insufficiency, severe hypercalciuria, and renal calculi.
Side Effects: Possible side effects include flatulence, diarrhea, constipation, and upper gastrointestinal discomfort, though these are rare. Prolonged use may rarely lead to hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Reef-DX should be used during pregnancy and lactation only as directed by a physician.
Precautions & Warnings: In cases of mild hypercalciuria, monitoring and possible dose adjustment may be necessary. Serum calcium levels should be monitored in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment and during long-term use. Patients with a history of renal stones should exercise caution.
Overdose Effects: Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, anorexia, abdominal cramps, headache, constipation, and irritability. Treatment involves discontinuing the therapy and ensuring adequate hydration.
Therapeutic Class: Reef-DX belongs to the therapeutic class of specific mineral and vitamin combined preparations.
Storage Conditions: Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
